The work being shown at the TipTop Building on Saturday, December 11, began as a series of portraits of friends whose closest living relatives were thousands of miles away.

It was while I was working on this project that my father died, in the Fall of 1998. Through the final weeks of his life an oxygen machine helped to sustain him. During my visits, the breathing machine's rhythmic, hypnotic, beautiful drone had an unexpectedly calming effect, as peaceful as it was ominous. The sound of that breathing machine has become the center of this piece.

"here nor there" is dedicated to
Frank Grady (1920-1998).
